San José, in the centre of the country, doesn't make a great first impression, but it's well worth digging deeper to discover the city's charms, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, where you’ll get acquainted with the future of Costa Rican art, or the magnificent Teatro Nacional, and the history museum in the city centre.
